Mennonite Church Canada members, Christian Peacemaker Teams, and members of the general community took part in A Walk for Peace and Justice with the goal of petitioning the federal government to stop secret trials in Canada and end deportations to torture. "Security certificates" can cause a refugee or permanent resident in Canada to be arrested and held without bail or charges indefinitely, without the person or his/her lawyer allowed to see the evidence. If a certificate is upheld there is no appeals process; the person is deported back to a country where the risk of torture exists. The United Nations, Amnesty International, and various other human rights groups have expressed concern over this process. There are currently five Muslim men in Canada who have been detained for several years without charges ever being laid. The walk began at the Delta Edmonton South hotel, where a Mennonite conference was going on, and finished at the office of Rahim Jaffer, MP Walk took place on July 6, 2006 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
