"The Criminal Law Handbook: Know Your Rights, Survive the System" by Attorneys Paul Bergman & Sara J. Berman is an impressive 678 page tome of information all about criminal law. The book sets out to assist you with understanding the confusing rules and procedures involved with criminal offences and to teach you how the system works, why police, lawyers, and judges do what they do, and most importantly, what you can do to limit the harm. I feel it accomplishes that goal very well. Most of the book is written in an understandable question-and-answer format to explain the criminal justice system, both inside and outside the courtroom. It goes from initial police questioning through trials to prison and parole.
One must remember that Nolo focuses on making the law accessible to everyone, and the books published by Nolo do an outstanding job of doing just that. Therefore, this book isn't a criminal law text book as you would find in law school, but a comprehensive guide for the non-lawyer or layperson. For such a guide, it is very good and includes a lot of information.

Again, this book is a large tome of information. It is organized well and has many side-bars and examples. If you have a question regarding criminal law, more than likely this book will have an answer. The authors do point out that the law varies from state to state, and I'd recommend that besides this book, anyone dealing with the criminal system on their own look to the statutes in the jurisdiction they are in to ensure they have the law that is applicable to their case. That's why I really like that the final chapter provides guidance in this area. The authors also note that the book is not intended as a detailed guide to self-representation. It is a thorough overview of the entire system, but it's not everything, and that's because you can't put everything regarding our complex system in one book.
This is an excellent tour of the criminal justice system and one of the best resources around for the layperson who wants or needs to navigate the complex maze of rules and laws that make up our system. I recommend it highly for anyone who wants to know all about criminal law.

In the Canadian city of Vancouver Falun Gong practitioners have made themselves a major presence at the local Chinese consulate. But the city ordered the 24-hour appeals to stop. And this week, Falun Gong practitioners will appear in court, challenging the city's decision. Here's more. HEADLINE: A seven-year Falun Gong protest in Vancouver may now be in jeopardy due to city enforcement. STORY: Falun Gong practitioners have maintained a round-the-clock protest outside the Chinese consulate since August 2001, in an effort to urge the Chinese regime to end the persecution of Falun Gong. Day or night, rain or shine, theyve continuously taken shifts in the long-running appeal for their relatives and friends who are still imprisoned and tortured in mainland China. However, they are now faced with a new challenge, as the city decided to enforce a bylaw to evict the structure and display boards. Clive Ansley, a lawyer in the Falun Gong's legal team, expresses his view on the citys action. [Clive Ansley, Lawyer]: The claim of bylaw infraction by the City of Vancouver is just a front. This is not the reason that the city was concerned. It has really has nothing to do with bylaw infraction; its a question of appeasing the Chinese government and the Chinese Consulate General. Raymond Zhang and his wife Cindy Song, like many other Falun Gong practitioners, are disappointed by the enforcement. [Cindy Song, Falun Gong Practitioner]: City counsel should allow its residents to have a ...

Copyright is a right. Fair use is a limitation on that right, which is not absolute. Specific methods of fair use are defined in court, and then only for that use. The American University School of Communication Center For Social Media has published a Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video: www.centerforsocialmedia.org "...the cultural value of copying is so well established that it is written into the social bargain at the heart of copyright law. The bargain is this: we as a society give limited property rights to creators, to reward them for producing culture; at the same time, we give other creators the chance to use that same copyrighted material without permission or payment, in some circumstances. Without the second half of the bargain, we could all lose important new cultural work just because one person is arbitrary or greedy. Copyright law has several features that permit quotations from copyrighted works without permission or payment, under certain conditions. Fair use is ...

Starr was initially appointed to investigate the suicide death of deputy White House counsel Vince Foster and the Whitewater real estate investments of Bill Clinton. The three-judge panel charged with administering the Independent Counsel Act later expanded the inquiry into numerous areas including an extramarital affair that Bill Clinton had with Monica Lewinsky. After several years of investigation Starr filed the Starr Report which alleged that Bill Clinton had lied about existence of the affair during a sworn deposition. The allegation opened the door for the impeachment of Bill Clinton and the five-year suspension of Clinton's law license. Starr currently serves as the President of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Mennonite Church Canada members, Christian Peacemaker Teams, and members of the general community took part in A Walk for Peace and Justice with the goal of petitioning the federal government to stop secret trials in Canada and end deportations to torture. "Security certificates" can cause a refugee or permanent resident in Canada to be arrested and held without bail or charges indefinitely, without the person or his/her lawyer allowed to see the evidence. If a certificate is upheld there is no appeals process; the person is deported back to a country where the risk of torture exists. The United Nations, Amnesty International, and various other human rights groups have expressed concern over this process. There are currently five Muslim men in Canada who have been detained for several years without charges ever being laid. The walk began at the Delta Edmonton South hotel, where a Mennonite conference was going on, and finished at the office of Rahim Jaffer, MP Walk took place on July 6, 2006 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Many adopting parents and adopted children across the United Kingdom have at least once asked themselves whether the process of adopting a child is final or whether there is a possibility that the biological parents could successfully reverse the new reality by 'claiming their child back' through the courts. This bothering question seems to have finally been answered by the Court of Appeal. In a decision, which Lord Justice Wilson said made him 'profoundly uncomfortable', the Court of Appeal has ruled that the adoption process is final. This means that children who are adopted after they have been removed from their biological parents cannot be returned to them, even if it is subsequently discovered that the parents were incorrectly accused of harming them. The case concerned a couple with four children. Three of the children were taken into care after suffering what were considered to be 'non-accidental' injuries. The children were adopted in 2004.
Evidence produced after this date indicated that the injuries sustained by the children were accidental, being consistent with the sort of injuries that would occur through normal parental handling of children suffering deficiencies of vitamin C and iron due to a diet based on soy milk rather than cow's milk. Appeals to set aside the adoption orders, made several years after the adoptions took place, failed, even though the Court was of the view that the original orders placing the children in council care would be unlikely to succeed were the case to be heard again. The adoption process is final. Once legal adoption has taken place, the child is, in law, the child of the new parents. For this reason, giving up a child for adoption or adopting a child is a decision which has to be given thorough consideration.
